La villa debe su nombre a la posición panorámica en una colina a la orilla de la carretera, completamente inmersa en el verde. Se accede a ella por un camino que sube por la ladera, flanqueado por 189 árboles entre cipreses, cedros del Líbano y cítricos.
Fue construida desde cero en el siglo XVIII y decorada con numerosos frescos, según la moda dominante en la nobleza pisana de construir residencias de recreo en la zona alrededor de San Julián, que se convirtió en ese periodo en un destino del turismo termal de la aristocracia europea.
