Het Koninklijk Paleis was eeuwenlang de zetel van de regering van de stad Milaan en van het Koninkrijk Lombardije-Venetië. Tot 1919 was het paleis in het bezit van de koninklijke familie. Het gebouw werd toen door de staat aangekocht en sindsdien wordt het gebruikt voor tentoonstellingen.
Aanvankelijk was het paleis veel groter dan nu en had het twee binnenplaatsen. Later werden delen gesloopt om meer ruimte te bieden voor de Dom. Het paleis ligt ten zuiden van de Dom. De voorgevel van het paleis volgt de lijn van de voormalige binnenplaats. Daarom ligt de ingang een eindje van de Piazza del Duomo af.
