Het kasteel van Castiglione delle Stiviere is een militaire structuur die waarschijnlijk in de 9e eeuw is gebouwd op een pre-existent Romeins castrum op de top van een heuvel die het dorp overziet. Het was de residentie van de Gonzaga, heren van Castiglione.

In 1310 werd het aangevallen door de troepen van Cangrande della Scala van Verona, die tegen Brescia vocht.
Aan het begin van de 15e eeuw ging het over naar de Gonzaga van Mantua en Ludovico II voerde werkzaamheden uit om de muren te verstevigen. In 1491 gaf Ludovico III Gonzaga de architect Giovanni da Padova de opdracht om een nieuw fort te bouwen.
Met Ferrante Gonzaga, de markies van Castiglione, werd het kasteel de zetel van zijn hof. Tussen deze muren, op 9 maart 1568, werd San Luigi geboren.
