De Villa di Murlo is een landelijk paleis of villa gelegen op de heuvels rondom San Casciano in Val di Pesa, langs de oude weg tussen Florence en Siena die de Pesa-rivier volgt. De huidige villa dateert uit de 15e eeuw, maar al in de Middeleeuwen bezat de Cavalcanti, een krachtige Florentijnse Guelph-familie, talrijke bezittingen in de omgeving van Murlo tussen de Pesa-rivier en haar zijrivier, de Virginio. Het oude feodale bezit werd vernietigd door de Ghibellijnen na hun overwinning op de Guelphs in de Slag bij Montaperti. Wat van het landgoed overbleef, werd verdeeld onder verschillende leden van de familie Cavalcanti, en Lorenzo Cavalcanti nam de taak van reconstructie en verbetering op zich, evenals het terugkopen van aangrenzende grond, zoals vastgelegd in een opname uit 1498.
