Door de komst van het Teatro Politeama in 1865, dat tegenwoordig de prestigieuze zetel van het Fondazione Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana is, werd deze plaats zo'n belangrijk oriëntatiepunt voor de stad Palermo, zowel wat betreft locatie als bekendheid, dat zelfs de twee grote pleinen Piazza Ruggero Settimo en Piazza Castelnuovo gewoonlijk Piazza Politeama worden genoemd.
Het plein vertegenwoordigt een van de populairste stadspleinen. Koppels, vrienden en vooral skaters van alle afkomsten ontmoeten elkaar voor het beroemde theater.
In 1875 bouwde de machtige familie Florio, die hun villa aan Piazza Castelnuovo had een de Palchetto della musica, bedoeld om muziekbands te ontvangen voor feesten, beurzen en evenementen. Het echte doel van de bouw was echter om te voorkomen dat Piazza Castelnuovo voor huisvesting zou worden gebruikt.
