Het Obersauer-stuwmeer ligt bij Esch-Sauer in Luxemburg en is het grootste meer van het land. De Sauer, die in de Ardennen ontspringt, en haar talrijke zijrivieren leveren jaarlijks 175 tot 240 miljoen kubieke meter water. Toen de natuurlijke Luxemburgse drinkwatervoorzieningen eind jaren veertig niet meer voldoende waren, besloot de Luxemburgse regering begin jaren vijftig om gebruik te maken van oppervlaktewater voor de drinkwaterwinning.
