Vóór deze brug gebouwd was moesten mensen en goederen overgezet worden door een veerman. De legende vertelt over een ruiter die de rivier wou oversteken en daarbij omkwam. Minder romantisch is waarschijnlijk de verklaring dat de mensen voor het bestaan van de brug of de overvaart met de boot, door het water moesten waden. Dat met koude en regen met ingespannen paarden zeker niet gemakkelijk was.
