Before this bridge was built, people and goods had to be ferried across by a ferryman. The legend tells of a rider who wanted to cross the river and perished in the attempt. Less romantic is probably the explanation that before the bridge existed or the ferry service, people had to wade through the water. This, under cold and rain with strained horses, was certainly not easy.
