De stad Luxemburg is de hoofdstad van het Groothertogdom Luxemburg, van het gelijknamige district en het gelijknamige kanton.
De stad Luxemburg werd rond het jaar 963 gesticht met de bouw van een kasteel op de resten van een oud Romeins castillum genaamd Lucilinburhuc. Het nieuwe kasteel, eigendom van Sigifred I, werd onmiddellijk beschermd met een eerste muur in 965. In 1050 werd een nieuwe buitenmuur parallel aan de vorige gebouwd om de groeiende stad te beschermen.
