Op het plein waar nu de Oldehove staat, stond omstreeks 1100 een tufstenen kerkje, dat in de 13e eeuw vervangen zou worden door een grotere, uit rode kloostermoppen opgetrokken kerk. Men kwam echter niet verder dan de aanleg van de fundering.
