Het ligt ten zuidwesten van IJlst en Sneek, ten noordwesten van Heeg, ten noorden van Gaastmeer en ten noordoosten van Sandfirden. De dorpskern ligt aan het meer de Oudegaasterbrekken waaraan diverse havens liggen en het kent twee grote campings.Het dorp trekt door zijn ligging ook veel watersporters, onder meer vanwege de mogelijkheden tot zeilen en windsurfen. In 2021 telde het dorp 735 inwoners. Onder het dorp valt ook de buurtschap De Band.
