Het is één van de meest sprookjesachtige kastelen van Nederland. Het omgrachte Kasteel Schaloen heeft, zoals het er nu uitziet, iets weg van een Frans jachtslot.
De allereerste bouw uit de twaalfde eeuw, brandde in de zestiende eeuw volledig af. De bijgebouwen, stallen en schuren, stammen uit de achttiende eeuw.
Na de Franse bezetting krijgt het kasteel tijdens een restauratie van architect Pierre Cuypers in 1894 zijn huidige uiterlijk met de westelijke toren en traptoren.
Tip! Kijk je in de gracht vanuit de grote stenen brug, dan zie je geheid een heleboel karpers zwemmen…
