In 1839 was dit een onaanzienlijk houten gebouwtje aan de oostkant van het Spaarne, het voorlopige station van de Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij (HSM). Maar hier gebeurde de ontvangst van de eerste feestelijke stoomtrein uit Amsterdam. De trein werd getrokken door de pas een paar weken tevoren uit Engeland gearriveerde locomotieven De Arend en De Snelheid rolt een rij van een stuk of negen rijtuigen het station van Haarlem binnen.
