Schepen die vanuit plaatsen aan de voormalige Zuiderzee vertrokken, gingen op de rede van Texel voor anker om bij gunstige wind uit te varen naar de Oostzeelanden, Frankrijk, Spanje, Portugal en later ook Oostindië.
Om de schepen die voor de rede van Texel lagen te beschermen, nam Willem van Oranje het initiatief tot de aanleg van het fort De Schans. De Schans werd omstreeks 1574 gebouwd.
In 1811 bracht Napoleon een bezoek aan De Schans. Hij liet het fort vergroten en er werden westelijk en oostelijk van De Schans versterkingen aangelegd: Lunette en Redoute.
Rond 1930 werden de Lunette, de Redoute en een gedeelte van De Schans afgegraven om de grond te gebruiken voor dijkverzwaring. Inmiddels is fort De Schans weer in gedeelten gerestaureerd. Het is zoveel mogelijk teruggebracht naar de situatie uit 1813.
