Het ligt ten noordoosten van Drachten, ten oosten van het meer De Leijen en ten zuidwesten van Harkema. Langs en door het dorpsgebied loopt de N369 en via de Lits is verbonden met De Leijen.Rottevalle bezit een jachthaven aan de Lits en daarmee een directe verbinding met de Lits-Lauwersmeerroute. In 2021 telde het dorp 1.405 inwoners.
