Nijhuizum ligt ten zuidoosten van Bolsward, tussen Workum en de Vlakke Brekken en de Bombrekken. De dorpskern is verbonden via de Nijhuizumervaart en De Grons direct verbonden met de Vlakke Brekken. Langs het dorpsgebied stroomt de Lange Vliet.Het dorp heeft ook een kleine aanleghaven. In 2021 telde het dorp 55 inwoners. Nijhuizum is een streekdorp waar de melkveehouderij en toerisme/recreatie een belangrijke rol spelen, met drie campings.
