Het is gelegen ten noordoosten van Wijnaldum bij de Waddenzee. Het vormt met Sexbierum een tweelingdorp. Door het dorpsgebied stroomt de Dijksvaart en er langs de Opvaart en de Roptavaart. Verder loopt de N393 door het dorpsgebied.In 2021 telde het dorp 140 inwoners. Onder het dorp valt een deel van de buurtschap Roptazijl in de Hornestreek, en een klein deeltje van het dorp valt zelf onder Sexbierum.
