Het ligt door de groei van Sneek net ten zuidoosten van deze stad, aan de industrieterreinen Houkesloot en It Ges. De dorpskern ligt ten noordoosten van de A7 en de Broeresloot en ligt aan de westoever van het water Ges, dat de verbinding vormt met de Houkesloot en het Prinses Margrietkanaal.Oppenhuizen vormt samen met Uitwellingerga zowel een tweelingdorp als een dubbeldorp. De twee dorpen worden te samen ook wel Top en Twel of Top & Twel genoemd. Het tweelingdorp heeft meerdere havens, waaronder verschillende jachthavens.
