De kerk werd in 1660 gebouwd en verving de eerder afgebroken Sint-Maartenskerk op de Sint-Maartensterp. De kerk ligt in de oude agrarische dorpskern van Makkum. Later breidde Makkum zich uit naar het zuiden en kwam het centrum te liggen in Statum bij de sluis naar de vroegere Zuiderzee. De oorspronkelijke ingang van de kerk bevond zich in de toren aan de westzijde. Boven de oude ingang vind je nog een gedenksteen die gelegd is door jonker Bonno van Donia, telg van een vooraanstaande Makkumer familie. In 1887 kreeg de kerk een nieuwe ingang aan de oostzijde. De kerk heeft een bijzonder grafzuiltje voor de 18e-eeuwse Makkumse dichteres Cynthia Lenige; zij stierf op 24-jarige leeftijd aan dysenterie.
