Meer dan 30 bruggen zijn er aangelegd om het 59km lange Amsterdam-Rijn Kanaal te kunnen passeren. 'Onze' Goyerbrug is er daar één van. Zoals de naam zegt verbindt dit kanaal Het IJ van Amsterdam met de Rijn die, waar zijn elkaar ontmoeten, Waal heet. Je zou het soms niet zeggen, maar het is het drukst bevaren kanaal ter wereld!
Het kanaal werd in 1952 geopend en later nog eens verbreed tot 100 tot 120 meter.
Nog een saillant detail: Anton Mussert, oprichter en leider van de NSB was ingenieur bij de Provinciale Waterstaat van Utrecht en had een wezenlijke bijdrage aan de totstandkoming van het kanaal.
