Het kanaal doorkruist de gehele Gelderse Vallei van zuid naar noord. Het oudste deel stamt al uit de middeleeuwen en werd gegraven tussen Rhenen en Veenendaal en diende om turf te kunnen winnen.
Het gedeelte van Veenendaal naar Amersfoort was vooral bedoeld om de afwatering uit de Gelderse Vallei te verbeteren. Zoals het kanaal er nu uit ziet dateert uit de jaren 30 van de vorige eeuw. Naast de afwatering had het ook nog als doel om de Grebbelinie te versterken. Ten noordwesten van Amersfoort sluit het kanaal aan op de rivier De Eem waardoor het water naar het IJsselmeer wordt afgevoerd.
