De Utrechtse Heuvelrug telt in totaal zo’n 400 prehistorische grafheuvels. Veel daarvan zijn niet eenvoudig terug te vinden omdat ze zijn overwoekerd met allerlei planten en struiken. Maar op verschillende plaatsen is de begroeiing verwijderd en komen de grafheuvels voor de wandelaar weer tevoorschijn, zoals op deze plek. De grafheuvels stammen voornamelijk uit de nieuwe steentijd en de bronstijd, nadat rond 4000 voor Christus de eerste landbouwers zich vestigden op de stuwwal en in de uiterwaarden van de Rijn. Vooral de voorname personen van de gemeenschap werden onder grafheuvels begraven. De heuvels ontwikkelden zich als een plek van verering en herinnering.
