NATUURGEBIED UTOPIA
Aan de oostzijde van Texel ligt Utopia, een prachtig, binnendijks vogelgebied. Hier broeden grote sterns en steltlopers op de schelpenstrandjes. Vanaf de waddendijk heb je goed zicht op de vogels in het krekengebied.
Bij spring- of stormvloed vluchten de vogels van de kwelders De Schorren en de Waddenzee naar een veilige plek achter de dijk. In Utopia kunnen ze rustig wachten tot de kwelders en wadplaten weer droog liggen. Door de stijgende zeespiegel zijn deze vluchtplekken hard nodig. Natuurmonumenten heeft in 2010 en 2011 het grasland omgevormd tot een krekengebied met slikranden en vele schelpenbanken.
