Alleen de naam herinnert nog aan het feit dat aan het einde van deze weg een station lag. De spoorlijn Amsterdam-Utrecht (1843) was de tweede spoorlijn van Nederland. De transportfunctie die de Vecht eeuwenlang had gehad viel met de komst van de trein grotendeels weg. Station Nieuwersluis fungeerde als regionale overslagplaats. Dit kwam doordat iedere trein hier verplicht moest stoppen. Deze eis had de eigenaar van buitenplaats Sterreschans te Nieuwersluis, Doude van Troostwijk, gesteld bij de onteigening van zijn land door de Spoorwegen. Toen eind 19de eeuw de Koning Willem II kazerne werd gebouwd was het met de komst van honderden soldaten helemaal gemakkelijk dat hier al een station was.
