De kop-hals-rompboerderij is ontstaan uit de langhuisboerderij, een boerderij waarbij woon- en bedrijfsgedeelte onder een doorlopend dak liggen. Door de betere landbouwmethoden in de 16e eeuw ontstond er behoefte aan meer opslagruimte voor de oogst. Hieraan werd voldaan door achter het woongedeelte aan de zijkant van de schuur een stuk aan te bouwen. Hierdoor ontstond de kop-hals-rompboerderij, waarbij het woongedeelte niet recht voor de schuur staat. Bij latere, geheel nieuwgebouwde boerderijen, blijft deze opzet gehandhaafd.
De onderdelen van kop-hals-rompboerderij zijn functioneel: wonen in het voorhuis (kop), werken in de hals en oogstopslag en veestallen in de schuur (romp).
