Het landgoed ontleent zijn naam aan Duitse arbeiders die hier eind 18e eeuw woonden en is een
prachtig landgoed dat in 1876 werd ontworpen door de landschapsarchitecten Copijn en Springer.
Zij breidden ook het voormalige beukendoolhof uit. Dit doolhof met middenin een folly in de vorm van een kluizenaarshuisje is recent weer in oude luister hersteld en ook de doolhof werd weer volgens de historische tekening aangeplant.
Het huis is in 1867 gebouwd daarna werd het omliggende park aangelegd. Bijzonder is het golvende karakter van het terrein. Het Utrechts Landschap is eigenaar van de grond.
In het huis is sinds enkele jaren het Herman van Veen Arts Center gevestigd.
