Tot ongeveer 1900 heeft er een Joodse gemeenschap in Buren bestaan. Toen in 1798 de Staatsregeling, waarin alle godsdiensten gelijk werden gesteld, van kracht werd kon de Joodse gemeenschap in 1804 een gebouw aankopen aan de Kniphoek dat als synagoge werd ingericht. De synagoge heeft ongeveer 100 jaar dienstgedaan. De Joodse gemeenschap werd rond 1900 opgeheven omdat deze te klein was geworden.
