Het ligt ten noordoosten van Bolsward, tussenin de dorpen Burgwerd, Wommels, Kubaard en Lollum. Met die laatste vormt het een tweelingdorp. Ze hebben ook een gezamenlijke dorpsbelangenvereniging.Door en langs Waaxens stroomt de Lathumervaart en vanaf de dorpskern verbonden met via een opvaart. In 2021 telde het dorp 90 inwoners. Onder het dorp valt ook de buurtschap De Bieren.
