De drie veerponten over de Bergse Maas (Drongelse Veer, Capelse Veer en Bernse Veer) waren tot februari 2024 gratis voor alle verkeer. Dat was meer dan een eeuw eerder de concessie van de overheid geweest aan de bevolking langs de Bergse Maas. Deze kunstmatig aangelegde rivier - eigenlijk dus een kanaal - werd in 1904 in gebruik genomen om de monding van de Maas te verplaatsen van Woudrichem naar Lage Zwaluwe. Daarmee werd een eind gemaakt aan de terugkerende wateroverlast rond de Merwede.
In februari 2024 was het voor gemotoriseerd verkeer echter gedaan met de gratis dienstverlening. Voetgangers en fietsers worden nog wel gratis overgezet.
