Het Centro Histórico do Porto staat sinds 1996 op de Werelderfgoedlijst van de UNESCO. Dit historisch centrum wordt gevormd door het gebied dat omsloten was door de Muralhas Fernandinas en enkele aanpalende gebieden. Tot het Centro Histórico behoort ook de rivieroever van Vila Nova de Gaia, hoewel dit officieel geen deel uitmaakt van Porto. Het uitzicht op de stad vanaf de overzijde van de Douro is een van de fraaiste ter wereld. Het letterlijk hoogtepunt wat dit betreft is het uitzicht vanaf Serra do Pilar, een voormalig klooster op de top van de hoogste heuvel tegenover Porto in Vila Nova de Gaia.
