Craiova is een van de grootste Roemeense steden. De stad is de hoofdstad van het district Dolj en ligt in de regio Oltenië. Craiova wordt ook wel "de Olteense hoofdstad" genoemd. Gelegen aan de linkeroever van de Jiu en op ongeveer gelijke afstand van de Zuidelijke Karpaten als van de Donau, is zij de belangrijkste commerciële stad ten westen van Boekarest.
