Wat Chai Sri Phum werd gebouwd in 1519 tijdens de regering van koning Phra Mueang Kaeo (regering 1495-1525). Het klooster werd gevestigd op een gunstige plek waar een vijgenboom stond, beschouwd als een brenger van geluk voor de stad. Het klooster werd gerenoveerd in 1837 tijdens de regering van prins Phuthawong (prins Phutthawong of Buddhavansa, regering 1826-1846) en staat nu lokaal bekend als Wat Phan Ta Kun.
