De Thraciërs bewoonden het gebied in de oude tijden. De Keltische Scordisci vielen het gebied binnen in 279 v.Chr.
De Romeinse weg "Via Militaris" werd in de 1e eeuw n.Chr. aangelegd en liep door de stad. In mei 2010 werden goed bewaard gebleven resten van de weg opgegraven tijdens de werkzaamheden aan Corridor 10. Een Ottomaanse militaire basis opereerde in het westen van Dimitrovgrad vóór de volledige onafhankelijkheid van de Balkanlanden.
