Het Megalopolis-bekken is een tektonische half-graben (breuklijnen bevinden zich in het oosten van het bekken) gevuld met Neogene tot Holocene continentale sedimenten. Dit bassin was ooit een meer en moerasgebied. Het was het graf van een olifant met rechte slagtanden (of Palaeoloxodon antiquus ). Dat is een uitgestorven olifantensoort die Europa en West-Azië bewoonde tijdens het Midden- en Laat-Pleistoceen (781.000–30.000 jaar voor heden) .
