De Zwarte Dood teisterde Europa tussen 1347 en 1352 en eiste naar schatting 50 miljoen levens. Hoewel historici het er al langer over eens zijn dat de pestbacterie via handelsroutes uit Azië naar Europa kwam, was het tot dusver onduidelijk waarom de ziekte zich net op dat moment met een verwoestende kracht naar Europa verspreidde.
