Dike breaches typically occur at weak points in the dike that can arise from poor maintenance or by seepage. Seepage (the emergence of groundwater at the surface) occurs due to an underground water flow from a higher to a lower area. When water seeps under a dike, dike material can be washed away.
In the event of dike breaches, the water violently surges into the inland area, creating deep whirlpools (wheels or welens). Due to the depth of the wheel, the dike can no longer be repaired at the same spot. Because the new section of the dike has been built around the wheel, the IJssel dikes have gradually taken on a winding course. The bends in the dikes often refer to old dike breaches.
