Its location at the mouth of the Oude IJssel in the Gelderse IJssel made Doesburg an important trading city. Doesburg is one of the seven Hanseatic cities on the IJssel, centrally located between the Achterhoek, Liemers and Veluwe. The Hanseatic League was an alliance of merchants and cities that tried to protect and expand their trade through cooperation.
After the 15th century, Doesburg's strong position crumbled. The IJssel became less navigable for trade to and from Doesburg, among other places, due to silting up.
During the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648), Doesburg changed from a trading town into a fortified town with associated fortifications.
