Calçotada is a gastronomic festival that originated in the village of Valls in the province of Tarragona. The local tradition consists of eating calçots, a type of sweet onion that was discovered in the nineteenth century and has since become one of the main features of Catalan culinary culture. The calçotada craze is now celebrated throughout Catalonia between January and April, always in the company of friends and family. The last Sunday of January, the 'Gran Festa de la Calçotada' takes place in Valls. The streets and squares fill with people eager to enjoy the local delicacy. The event includes a varied program of festive activities.
