Discover all benefitsDeparture in Galmaarden at the summit of the Bosberg, known for the heroic attacks of the Ronde van Vlaanderen. Here, at Heirbaan 135, you will also find Café El Faro with a terrace, a well-known stop for cyclists and hikers. Parking available next to and across from the café. • With your back to the Raspaillebos, head south towards the transmission mast, passing an information board (1). This is the Noremansweg. Follow this for 1.5 kilometers, ignoring all side streets. This road becomes semi-paved as it leads you along beautiful panoramas. Continue down to Paulusstraat. Follow this to the right. This will take you to the Sint-Pauluskapel (2) in late Gothic style. In its current form, the chapel probably dates back to the early 16th century. It was restored in 2002. Every year on January 25—the Feast of the Conversion of Paul—an authentic folklore festival takes place here. It has been intertwined with Galmaarden for centuries. Be on the lookout for the old water spring behind the chapel: a sacred place for our ancestors, and for us, a lovely picnic spot with a bench. • Turn right at the spring, taking a path between the gardens, which after about a hundred meters meets a street lined with villas, the Kapelledreef. Turn right to Geraardsbergsestraat. Carefully cross this and shortly after, turn left until you pass the bus shelter. Turn right at the information board about the Markvallei reserve (3). Follow the signs from Natuurpunt (red diamond pattern ???). After about 100 meters, turn left onto a narrow path leading to a pond and continue in a zigzag through the beautiful nature reserve. At the Mark, be aware of the treatment plant on the other side, then turn right just before the railway bridge. Here turn right again and follow the signs to a field path. Turn right here. Eventually, you will reach the Geraardsbergsebaan again. Cross this to follow the Kapelledreef again until reaching Paulusstraat. This time turn right, so don’t go back to the chapel. Slightly further, turn left into Wilderstraat. Caution: about a hundred meters after the curve and just behind house number 6 (?), take a narrow path to the left to follow the red signs from Natuurpunt again. • After about 200 meters, choose the path to the right, and after another 200 meters, you arrive at the Kluysbos reserve (4). This is an outcrop of the Raspaille, Moerbeke, and Karkoolbos forest complex and has been owned by Natuurpunt since 1996. With a slope of 8 to 13 percent, the area has its own micro-relief, which is further enhanced because a stream crosses the forest. • This section of the hike is particularly beautiful in spring, when first the beech hyacinths and then the wild garlic are in full bloom. The path winds through the forest, crossing a stream over a wooden bridge and reaching a "sensitive location" of Natuurpunt. Here you will turn right. After a rather steep incline, you arrive at a T-junction (not very clear), where you must turn left. In a clearing stands a memorial panel (5) commemorating Jean-Pierre Somers, the conservator of the Kluysbos reserve. At the end of the clearing, leave the reserve and take the field path far to the right. At the end of the path—a T-junction—turn left into Bruinbroekstraat until you reach Kapellestraat. Turn left and after a few hundred meters, you are back at the Bosberg. • After Café El Faro, take the path to the right next to the campsite. At the end of the campsite, follow the right fork and descend through the forest. Caution, this path can be quite muddy in wet weather, with detours available on the right side. Once out of the forest, continue straight ahead. Ignore side streets until you must turn right towards Helix, a Flemish nature and environmental education center. Head up the slope and at the top, three hundred meters behind the center, turn right. Before you unfolds a picturesque landscape with gentle meadows, pollard willows, a stream, and the forest in the background. Behind the pollard willows, you come onto asphalt. First follow right, then immediately back left on an ascending, partially hollow path with diverse vegetation. • A bit further along on the right side of the road, set back a little, stands the Juffrouwke (6), a small chapel from the 17th century recently thoroughly restored. Beautiful idyllic location at a spring. In the season, you can also admire whole fields of beech hyacinths and wild garlic here. At the barricade at the end of the larches, turn left. At the back of the gardens, the hike turns right. Go briefly left again until behind the forest edge, for a beautiful view over the gentle Pajottenland with the Congoberg (7). Turn around and continue the hike on a steep slope with a large spring area in the depth. Finally, you will come to a gravel road. Turn left. Continue turning left until you reach the starting point.
