Während der klassischen Ära war Ermioni bekannt für seine Schiffsbauer und auch für die Herstellung von Porphyra oder Tyrianisch Purpur, einem sehr wichtigen roten Farbstoff. Es handelt sich um ein Sekret, das von mehreren Arten von räuberischen Meeresnacktschnecken aus der Familie Muricidae, auch bekannt als 'Murex', produziert wird. In der Antike erforderte das Gewinnen dieses Farbstoffs Zehntausende von Schnecken und erheblichen Arbeitsaufwand, weshalb der Farbstoff sehr geschätzt wurde. Dieser Farbstoff wurde zur Färbung der Uniformen vieler Armeen verwendet, darunter auch die von Alexander dem Großen.
