In the cemetery of Evere, you will find quite a few celebrities. Many former mayors are buried here: De Brouckère, Buls, Max, but also Jules Anspach, who solemnly opened the cemetery during his lifetime. It was a burial ground favored by the freethinkers, including ULB founder Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen, who is commemorated by the students of ULB and VUB on November 20th (the founding date). Other notable deceased persons buried here include Raymond Goethals, Paul Vanden Boeynants, and the French painter Jacques-Louis David. The cemetery is also the setting for many collective graves and monuments. There is a memorial for the victims of the fire in the Innovation in 1967, and there are monuments for the Battle of Waterloo, the Belgian Revolution, and World War II. Also buried here are the fallen from World War I, which we commemorate on November 11th. Several dozen Belgians and Britons, and as many as 1,100 Germans.
