Short description

Zerbst/Anhalt - Moritz - Dornburg - Magdeburg

Description

The Luther Trail runs for about 53 km from Zerbst via Gommern to Magdeburg. Zerbst was the largest and most important city in Anhalt during the Reformation. To this day, the former Franciscan monastery houses the oldest and largest Protestant grammar school, which contains a historic library with Reformation writings and other treasures. Along the Luther Trail between Zerbst and Magdeburg, several churches invite pilgrims to visit and offer space for contemplation.

Additional information

Walloon Church

The simple beauty of the Walloon Church stems from its history as a monastery church of a mendicant order. Together with the Magdalene Chapel and the Church of St. Petri, it shapes the silhouette of Magdeburg city on the banks of the Elbe River.

In 1285, an Augustinian monastery was founded near the Elbe River, but was abandoned by the monks with the introduction of the Reformation. In 1694, the Reformed Walloon congregation acquired the associated church, which was henceforth called the Walloon Church. During World War II, the church fell victim to bombings. Reconstruction began in 1967. Today, the Telemann Bell stands in the southern side aisle, originally belonging to the Church of the Holy Spirit and cast in 1683 by the Magdeburg bell founder Jacob Wentzel. The bell features a crucifix and a dove as symbols of the Holy Spirit, as well as the names of pastors, church fathers, and elders.

Luther connection

The church belonged to the Augustinian monastery that Martin Luther inspected in 1516 on behalf of his order. He preached here on June 24, 1524. When the Great Elector offered refuge to the Reformed refugees from Wallonia at the end of the 17th century, they used the Augustinian church, which was then known as the Walloon Church.
