The museum was founded on November 6, 2011.
The building is trapezoidal, white concrete, with a characteristic row of columns reminiscent of arms holding the air — inspired by Cocteau's own work designed by Rudy Ricciott.
The collection is based on the donation of Séverin Wunderman in 2005 : over 1,800 works, of which approximately 1,000 were by Cocteau himself. The collection includes drawings, paintings, lithographs, ceramics, tapestries, posters, personal items, and photographs—a total of over 2,400 pieces.
In addition, it contains temporary exhibitions (such as graphic works, posters or multimedia), educational spaces, workshop and documentation space.
