Like many well-to-do Amsterdammers in the Golden Age, Admiral Cornelis Tromp owned a second house outside the city next to a substantial building on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. The house within the city was inhabited in the winter season, the mansion outside the city in the summer months. Twice a year, residents and staff and, in the case of the less wealthy families, also crockery, linen and household goods, moved from one place to another, usually by ship.
The Huis De Trompenburgh, built by order of Cornelis Trompenburgh, is an important country estate in 's-Graveland. The mansion is shaped like a ship and is surrounded by water. From the roof, designed like a ship's deck, the view used to reach as far as the Zuiderzee.
