El Matto di mare se traduce vagamente como 'tzeezotje', por el nombre del bistró de la plaza.
La escultura fue realizada por el artista Dirk Michiels y representa tres bacalaos.
Cuando los pescadores pescaban un bacalao grande en el pasado, lo llamaban 'zwien' (un cerdo). El pescado se vendía en esta plaza y por eso se llamaba 'zwieneplein' (plaza del cerdo).
Fue el dueño de 'tzeezotje', quien es un buen amigo de Dirk Michiels, quien tuvo la idea de organizar un festival de pesca de tres días en la plaza. Como recuerdo imborrable, se decidió instalar una obra de arte en la plaza.
