El vizconde vivía en esta casa de campo de Brugse Vrije.
El Brugse Vrije fue el vizcondado más grande del condado de Flandes. Incluía la región alrededor de Brujas, bordeada por el Mar del Norte , el Escalda Occidental y el Yser , y fue fundada en el siglo X.
El edificio consta de 2 partes : a la derecha el antiguo registro civil ricamente decorado del siglo XVI ya la izquierda el antiguo palacio de justicia del siglo XVIII, de estilo clasicista. En la sala de regidores se encuentra la monumental chimenea Keizer-Karel del siglo XVI, en roble, mármol y alabastro, diseñada por Lanceloot Blondeel. Junto con las pinturas, los revestimientos de las paredes y el techo, funcionó como símbolo del poder de la dinastía de los Habsburgo.
