En 1632 nace el filósofo Spinoza en Ámsterdam de padres judíos portugueses, cerca de la Plaza Waterloo, donde también hay un monumento. Tuvo una enorme influencia en pensadores como Hegel, Nietzsche y Einstein. Después de su estancia en Ámsterdam, Spinoza encuentra su primer alojamiento en Tulpenburg, en el camino hacia Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, en 1660. Luego se traslada a Rijnsburg y se instala con el cirujano Herman Hooman. Esa vivienda es ahora conocida como la casita de Spinoza. En el otoño de 1669 se muda a La Haya. Vive un breve tiempo en Veerkade, tras lo cual se muda a Paviljoensgracht, la casa del pintor Hendrik van der Spyk. Aquí vivirá hasta su muerte por tuberculosis en 1677. Allí todavía se encuentra su estatua.
