Le nom moderne de Porto Heli se traduit par la 'Baie des Anguilles'. Une théorie évidente affirme que les anguilles étaient la base de l'industrie de la pêche il y a de nombreuses années. Mais d'autres théories indiquent que le nom Heli vient d'une corruption linguistique progressive du nom "Alies" ou "Halieis", l'ancienne ville située sur le côté sud-est du port. La ville de Halieis est maintenant à moitié submergée dans la mer.
