Oude-Tonge a beaucoup souffert de l'inondation de 1953. Dans la nuit du 31 janvier au 1er février, 305 personnes ont perdu la vie ici.
Après la catastrophe naturelle, la Croix-Rouge suédoise a donné un certain nombre de maisons en bois. Ces maisons ont été placées à l'époque sur la Julianastraat à Oude-Tonge.
En 2007, un grand nombre de ces maisons ont été démolies, mais avant cela, la société de logement locale a remplacé des maisons et des appartements de style suédois.
