Il culto della Madonna Nera risale al VI secolo, quando in questa città, allora chiamata Avenum, si stabilì una colonia siriana. La chiesa primitiva (1170-1180) ospita la statua miracolosa di San Pol. Giovanna d'Arco pregava davanti alla Madonna dei Miracoli. Fu durante le guerre di religione che la statua fu bruciata e la chiesa rovinata (1562). Alla fine del XVI secolo fu inaugurata una nuova statua, la stessa che si sta contemplando. Dopo la Rivoluzione, l'edificio fu restaurato. La chiesa fu incendiata nel 1940, ma nulla della cappella fu danneggiato dall'incendio. Un nuovo edificio è stato costruito e inaugurato nel 1966.
